How to Create a Twitter List for Social Media Marketing

Twitter should be a part of your social media marketing plan. Twitter lists are an easy way to classify and interact with specific groups of people whom you follow on Twitter. For example, if you follow 20,000 people but want to see what only people in a particular demographic or who have a particular interest are talking about, you can create a Twitter list. This list enables you to see a feed of only those people, enabling you to engage with a targeted group.

To get started, make note of those people you wish to include in your Twitter list, and then follow these steps:

  1. In your Twitter account, click your avatar.

    A drop-down list appears, offering various activities you can perform.

  2. Select Lists.

  3. Scroll to the bottom of the Lists page that appears and click the Create New List button.

    The Create a New List pop-up window appears.

  4. Type a name for your list in the List Name text box.

  5. In the Description text box, type a couple of sentences describing what your list is about.

  6. Select either the Public or Private radio button to specify whether you want to make the list available to the general public or only to you.

  7. Click Save List.

    The page for your list appears, including a Find People to Add to Your List text box.

  8. In the text box, type a Twitter handle or person’s name and click Search.

    A Results page opens, listing accounts that match your search terms.

  9. Select the More User Actions option (which looks like a gear) for the account you want to add to your list.

  10. In the drop-down list that appears, select Add or Remove from Lists.

  11. In the Your Lists pop-up window that appears, select the check box next to the list name.

  12. Click Close (the X in the upper-right corner) to close the pop-up window.

  13. In the Search text box at the top of the Twitter page, enter the handle or name of another person you want to add to your list.

  14. When you see that person’s account in the drop-down list that appears, select it.

    That person’s Twitter page opens.

  15. Click the More User Actions option (the gear), which appears to the far right of the user’s profile picture.

  16. Repeat Steps 10 through 15 for all remaining users you want to add to your list.

You now have a targeted list of people to engage with. The list appears on your Lists page for you to view any time you want. Now you can see what the people on your list are talking about and sharing, without them getting lost among the other people you follow. You can create as many lists as you want, so you can create lists of people within particular age groups, who live in certain locations, or who have specific interests. The best part is it only takes a few minutes to put together.
