Claim Your Venue on foursquare - dummies

By Aaron Strout, Mike Schneider, B. J. Emerson

One of the most important steps in setting up your location-based marketing campaign is claiming your place, which means going through the LBS process to own your business’s place page in their system. This gives you privileges like access to the dashboard and the ability to create specials. This process varies from service to service and must be done on each service individually.

On foursquare, you can claim an individual venue or a chain of venues. If you have fewer than ten venues to claim, you can claim them individually. If you have more than ten, claim them as a chain. You must have a foursquare user profile. If you need help with the claiming process, foursquare has a robust support service.

To claim an individual venue, follow these steps:

  1. Go to foursquare and enter the name of your venue and city in the search box.

  2. Click your venue title in the search results.

At the bottom of the right column on the venue page, there should be a question that asks “Do you manage this venue?” followed by a Claim Here link. Look closely. It is teeny-tiny.

  3. Click the Claim Here link.

A page opens, where you can verify the business you’re claiming.

  4. Click the Continue Claiming This Venue link.

foursquare will ask you again if you’re authorized to claim the venue.

  5. (Optional) Read the Venue Platform Terms of Use.

  6. Click Yes.

foursquare reminds you that your venue page will be linked to your personal account. If you’re a small business with a few venues or less, that shouldn’t be a problem. However, if you have a lot of locations to claim, you should probably create a separate user account that’s dedicated to managing the venues.

Next, you’re taken to a page that asks what kind of venue you’re claiming.

  7. Click the link appropriate to the venue you’re claiming:

If you have ten or more venues, you may process a bulk claim, which we cover in the next section of this chapter.

    • One of a kind: You can get a verification code via phone.

    • Chain with less than 10 venues: If you’re a chain with fewer than 10 venues, you claim those venues in the same way individual venues are claimed.

    • Chain with 10 or more venues: Fill in the form to open a ticket with foursquare support. Make sure you include BULK in the title of your ticket.

  8. (Bulk claim only) watch for an e-mail from foursquare.

After you submit your ticket, a foursquare representative will e-mail you, verify that you have authority to claim the venues you want to claim, and send you an Excel spreadsheet. You’ll be asked for these two pieces of information:

    • The name of the foursquare user URL that will be the administrator for the locations (Remember, you may want to create a new user profile solely for this purpose.)

A user URL looks like this:

    • A list of the foursquare venue URLs for the locations you want to claim.

foursquare is pretty responsive to bulk claims. Check back on your user profile a few days or even a few hours later to see the venues you can manage.

  9. Note the verification code when foursquare gives it to you.

  10. Enter your verification code.
