How to Work with Blocks on Squarespace
Blocks are containers for your content on Squarespace that enable you to easily separate different types of content. You can add to your site three categories of blocks:
Content: Add your own content. Generally, you use content blocks to add text, images, in-page galleries, videos, audio, custom code, forms, maps, links, and products.
Structure: Display content and features related to blog pages, such as category lists, summary excerpts, and a search feature. For more information on structure blocks.
Social: Pull content and updates from social media profiles (such as Twitter, Instagram, and Foursquare) to display on your site.
You explore the individual types of blocks in Part IV.
How to add a block to your page
To add a block in a page, blog post, or gallery video, follow these steps:
Select a page in Content Manager.
Click the Add Block button.
On pages, the Add Block button is in the upper right of Content Manager. In page items — blog posts and gallery videos — the Add Block button is in the lower right of the content area as a dark circle with a plus sign.
The Add a Block selection window appears in the center of your browser.
If you decide that you don’t want to add a block, click anywhere outside the block selection window to close it.
(Optional) Switch to another block category (content, structure, or social).
The default set of blocks in the Add a Block window are the content blocks. If you want to add a structure block or social block, you must click the respective tabs at the top of the Add a Block window to switch to that category.
Add the block to the page in one of the following ways:
Click the block you want to add.
Clicking the block places it at the bottom of your page.
Drag the block to as needed.
You can place the block anywhere on the page. Click and hold down on the block, and then drag it away from the Add a Block dialog box. As you drag the block around, the Add a Block dialog box disappears and the edges of other blocks become highlighted in blue.
The configuration settings window for the block (if available) appears so you can configure the block.
How to remove a block
To remove a block, follow these steps:
Double-click the block to open the block’s configuration window.
Click the Remove button at the bottom of the configuration settings window.
A confirmation window appears.
Click the Confirm button to finalize the removal of the block.
When you remove a block, you can’t get it back. The removal is permanent.
You can add blocks only to pages or within a blog post or a gallery video. You can’t add blocks to gallery images.
The Text and Markdown content blocks do not have a configuration settings window. Instead, a formatting strip appears above the blocks to allow you to style text. On the far right of this strip, click the trash can icon to remove the block.
