How to Visit the Editing Areas on Squarespace

Squarespace 6 no longer has the editing modes that Squarespace 5 had (content, structure, style, and website management). Instead, editing tasks are split between Site Manager, which is your site’s administration area, and a floating toolbar in Preview.

Site Manager has the following five editing areas:

  • Preview: Modify your site’s design in Style mode using Style Editor. You also have access to a Content mode for managing content and blocks in your site’s layout structure.

  • Content Manager: Add pages to your site’s navigation. You can also add content to your pages using an extensive selection of blocks, and arrange those blocks on the page with the help of LayoutEngine.

  • Activity: Study how people visit your site to find out what content is the most — and least — popular. Also catch up on conversations in the comments of a blog post.

  • Site Settings: Control your site’s settings and configuration.

  • Commerce: Manage your site’s store orders, inventory, shipping, coupons, taxes, and other e-commerce settings.

Below are details about Squarespace 6’s Content Manager, Activity, Site Settings, and Commerce areas.


Now let’s look at the five editing areas of Site Manager in a little more detail. The first area takes you to the front of your site, which your site visitors will see.

Content manager area

You add pages to your site’s navigation, configure your pages’ settings, and add content to your pages in Content Manager. Content Manager contains one of Squarespace’s most powerful features, LayoutEngine, which you use to structure the content of your pages.

In Content Manager, as in Content mode in Preview, you add content to your pages using blocks, which are available in three categories:

  • Content: Add content such as text, images, and videos to your pages.

  • Structure: Display content from your blog, gallery, and products pages such as category or tag listings; previews of blog posts, gallery media, and products; and dates when you post content.

  • Social: Display activity and updates from your social networks, including Twitter, Flickr, and Foursquare.

You can add as many blocks to your pages as you like, and you can arrange them in just about any way you can imagine.

Activity area

Knowing what content on your site is popular can help you adjust that content to increase the activity of your visitors and your audience. The Activity area of Site Manager gives you a good overview of the following site statistics:

  • Traffic Overview: Check out general information, such as page views, the number of unique visitors to your site, and how many search engines index your pages.

  • Referrers: See which websites on the Internet are referring people to your website.

  • Popular Content: Use this set of metrics to find out which pages on your site are the most popular.

  • Search Queries: Find out what keywords and search engines were used to search for your site.

  • Detailed Activity: If you need to satisfy your inner geek, check out the useful information in Detailed Activity, such as a visitor’s IP address, the type of browser used to access your site, where the visitor is from, and how the visitor got to your site.

If your site has a blog page and people comment on your blog posts, you will need to manage those comments. The Activity area enables you to respond, approve, and delete comments as well as mark comments as spam.

Site Settings area

The Site Settings area is where you maintain the configuration of many site features that aren’t necessarily visible to your site visitors or that apply to all or most pages in your site. These features include adding a site title, adding and managing contributors, importing content from your old site, and managing the social sharing of your site’s content.

These settings are important to the overall functionality and configuration of your site and should not be ignored. At the least, evaluate each feature to determine whether it is something you could use to your advantage.

The Site Settings area contains advanced features, such as creating URL redirects and adding custom code to your site’s HTML <head> area. Although not everyone will find these features useful, they do give you more control over your site.

Commerce area

If you have a Business plan, you can use the Commerce area to sell physical items such as t-shirts, crafts, and artwork, or digital items such as music, e-books, and fonts in a store on your website. You can configure and maintain your store as you would the rest of your website.

In the Commerce area, you can

  • View your orders

  • Add products and track inventory

  • Create shipping methods

  • Manage promotions with promo codes

  • Set tax requirements for in-state customers

  • Configure custom e-mail notifications

  • Set your store’s return policy, terms of service, and privacy policy
