How to Configure a Product Item on Squarespace

By Kris Black

In addition to the Item screen on Squarespace, the Edit Product dialog box offers five additional screens of configuration settings for your product item page. They are:

  • Pricing and Variants: Physical products only. Set the price and create variants of your product.

  • Pricing and Upload: Digital products only. Set the price for your product and upload the digital file that is being sold.

  • Additional Info: Use blocks to add more customized content about your product.

  • Options: Add a thumbnail image and create a custom URL.

  • Social: Enable notifying your social profile accounts of new items on your site. The social accounts that appear here are configured in Site Settings.

Pricing and Variants screen for physical products

Physical products have attributes that you assign for selling on your site. Basic attributes include the price of the product and whether it is in stock. Following is a list of the default attributes provided when you create a physical product:

  • SKU: An abbreviation for stock-keeping unit. This unique identifier is used to refer to an item being sold. Squarespace will automatically assign a SKU (for example, SQ1234567), or you can customize the SKU with your own identifier.

  • Price: Enter the price a customer will pay for the product.

  • On Sale: Select this attribute if the item is on sale.

  • Sale Price: If you marked your item as on sale, enter the sale price.

  • In Stock: Enter the total number of units you have to sell for the product.

  • Unlimited: Select this if you have an unlimited supply of your product.

  • Weight: Enter the weight of the unit being sold.

Physical products can come in multiple variations, called variants, depending on what you are selling. For instance, if you’re selling a t-shirt design, you may want to offer the shirt in different sizes (small, medium, large, and extra large).

To differentiate one variant from another, you generally add an attribute of the product called an option. You can add custom options to your products such as color or size.

To add an option, follow these steps after opening the Edit Product dialog window:

  1. Go to the Pricing and Variants settings.

  2. Click the plus sign at the end of the attribute header row.

The Edit Option dialog box appears.

  3. Type the name of the option.

  4. Click Save

Your option is added in a new column to your list of variants.

To add a new variant, click the plus sign at the bottom-left of the variant rows. The new variant will be a duplicate of the previous variant. You can change the attributes as needed.

Pricing and Upload screen for digital products

Digital products are relatively simple and require only a few attributes:

  • Price: Enter the price a customer will pay for the product.

  • On Sale: Select this attribute if the item is on sale.

  • Sale Price: If you’ve marked your item as on sale, provide the sale price.

  • Digital File: Upload the digital file that is being sold for this product.

The file size limit for digital files is 200MB.

Additional Info screen

If a simple paragraph or two of text in the description area of the Edit Product dialog box isn’t sufficient for describing your product, use the Additional Info screen to build content with blocks. You have access to all the blocks available.

Let’s review how to add a block for the Additional Info screen:

  1. Click the plus sign in the lower-right corner.

The Add a Block dialog box appears.

  2. Click the block you want to add.

You can use the three links at the top of the Add a Block dialog box to choose blocks from three categories: Content, Structure, and Social.

If you have multiple blocks already added, you can also click-and-drag a block to place it directly where you want it go in the Additional Info layout.

Looking for ideas for additional information you might want to include? Consider adding related or similar products (products block), including a video demo of the product (video block), or providing a slideshow of images of customers using the product (gallery block).

Options screen

Similar to blog posts, the Options screen enables you to set your product’s thumbnail image and custom URL. These settings are automatically created based on what you added in the image area and for product name of the Item settings in the Edit Products dialog box:

  • Thumbnail Image: Add a thumbnail representing your product. The thumbnail is used to display the product and add the product to other areas of your site using content blocks, such as a summary block.

For the thumbnail image, Squarespace automatically uses the first image from the Image area of the Item screen of the Edit Products dialog box.

  • Post URL: The direct URL to the blog post’s specific page on your site. Squarespace automatically generates this URL, but you can change it.

The Social configuration screen offers the same settings as the Social screen in blog and gallery page items.
