Using E-Mail Marketing on LinkedIn - dummies

By John Arnold

You can send e-mail marketing messages to your LinkedIn connections and to other LinkedIn users who accept messages outside their own connections using three basic messaging methods:

  • Basic messaging inbox: The basic messaging inbox allows you to send messages to one or more connections. The messages can include text and URLs, but you can’t send pictures or other files. To get to the inbox, log in to your LinkedIn account and click the Inbox link in the main navigation area.

  • InMail: InMail has the same basic functionality as the basic messaging inbox, but you can send InMail to people who aren’t connected with you, provided they have opted to receive InMail from outside their own networks. Using InMail requires a paid account, which provides a set number of InMails depending on how much you want to pay. You should use InMail only for making introductions. People won’t appreciate your InMails if you use them for promotions. To send InMail, navigate to the page of the person to whom you want to send InMail and click Send InMail in the right column of the person’s profile. InMail is delivered to the recipient’s inbox.

  • Group announcements: Group announcements allow you to e-mail the members of your LinkedIn group. You can’t select individual group members, so make sure you reserve your group announcement e-mails to messages that are valuable and interesting to everyone in your group.

LinkedIn users have the ability to set different preferences for e-mail notifications. Users can choose to receive immediate e-mails or summary e-mails, or they can choose to read all messages on the website only. If your recipients choose to receive e-mails, they receive your e-mails at the e-mail addresses they specify in their LinkedIn account settings.
