The idea of communicating on the Internet is continually evolving, and with Twitter, you have the opportunity to reach millions of people in a matter of seconds. From a business marketing perspective, Twitter can help you create a sustainable communication model to drive more leads, revenue, and customer evangelists to your product. And with third-party tools, you can track your brand on Twitter, measure your Twitter effectiveness, and target Twitter users based on their location.

Get to Know Common Twitter Terms

Like any new technology, Twitter has its own vocabulary. If you’re just getting started with Twitter, here are some of the terms and lingo you and other twitterers might tweet around:

  • hashtag: Tagging an individual tweet by using a hash mark (#) in front of the tag word. For example, #twittermarketing. The hashtag allows Twitter users to search for a particular subject.

  • twalking: Sending a tweet via your mobile phone while you’re walking.

  • retweet (RT): A repeated tweet, in which twitterers send a tweet that they’ve received to their followers. An RT is much like a forwarded e-mail. Twitterers can also use RTs when they reply to a particular tweet, allowing their Twitter stream to read the reply.

  • tweeting: The act of posting a message to Twitter in 140 characters or less.

  • TweetDeck: A desktop application that allows you to manage and monitor your Twitter feed.

  • tweetup: When Twitter users meet in person — a meet-up organized through Twitter.

  • Twitosphere: A community of Twitter users.

  • Twitter stream: A collections of tweets, often listed in chronological order.

  • Twitterati: The A-list twitterers, also called the cewebrities.

Tools for Tracking Your Brand on Twitter

Before you jump into actively marketing on Twitter, find conversations about your brand. These effective and easy-to-use tools can help you fidn out what people are tweeting about your brand:

  • TwitterSearch: This is the official Twitter search page. Enter your brand name to search for conversations.

  • TweetBeep: This service sends you e-mail alerts whenever a twitterer mentions your keyword, brand, or URL.

  • social mention: Receive free daily e-mail alerts of mentions of your brand, company, CEO, or marketing campaign, or on a developing news story or a competitor.

  • BackTweets: With this service, find out how many people are tweeting a given URL, which you can use to track your business’s URL.

Tools for Measuring Twitter Marketing Effectiveness

Measure how effectively you’re using Twitter by tracking different aspects of clicks, retweets, Twitter ranking, and follower growth rate. Here are some tools that you can use:

  • This site ranks Twitter users based on location, their followers, the people they follow, and the number of updates.

  • Twitter Grader: This free tool allows you to measure the power of your Twitter profile. It looks at a variety of factors, including your number of followers, the power of those followers, and the level to which you’re engaging the community.

  • Twitter Analyzer: This free tool allows you to check certain measureables on your Twitter profile. It gives you the ability to measure popularity, tweets, reach, subject matter, and hashtags.

Search Twitter for Users in Your Location

By meeting people offline from Twitter, you can create some unique relationships that could potentially lead to new business. With the tools in the following list, you can search for users who live within a specific range from your location:

  • Twellowhood: This service allows you to locate people in your neighborhood with whom you can connect. With an interactive map on the site, you can zoom in to access a list of people that the site has found.

  • TwitterLocal: This Adobe Air platform enables you to watch as many location-based Twitter feeds as you want. The application searches users based on the locations that appear in their profiles.

  • NearbyTweets: This awesome tool allows you to network with locals, find locals who have similar interests, and develop a tweetup.
