Overview of the Banners Module in Joomla

By Seamus Bellamy, Steve Holzner

After you enter banner content into the Banner component, you tell Joomla how you want that content displayed through the Banners module. The Banners module displays banner content managed by the Banner component on your Joomla site.

Open the Banners module’s administration page by choosing Extensions→Module Manager and then click the module’s name.

In the Details pane, you find these options:

  • Title: The title of the module.

  • Position: Depending on what template your Joomla page utilizes, the options in the drop-down Position list allow you to decide where your banner will appear on a given page.

  • Access: Allows you to set the option for what users may see banner content on a page, depending on the user’s access level.

  • Ordering: Sometimes, a module may share the same position on a page as another module. With this option, you can decide the order that multiple modules will appear in when published to the same location.

  • Show Title: As the name suggests, the Show Title radio buttons let you decide whether or not the name of the module will be viewable to users who visit your site’s front end.

  • Start Publishing: With this feature, you can set a publication date and time for your module to be published.

  • Finish Publishing: With this feature, you can set a date and time to end publication of your module.

  • Language: This feature allows you to set the default language utilized by the module.

  • Note: A handy field for entering any information regarding this module that you’d like to remember for the next time you access it.

Below the Details pane is the Menu Assignment pane where you set what pages the module appears in.

If you want a module to appear on all pages, select On All Pages from the Module Assignment drop-down menu. If you want to specify what pages the module appears on, select either the option marked Only on the Pages Selected, or On All Pages Except Selected.

On the top right-hand side of the page, you find the Basic Options pane:

  • Target: This option enables you to control what happens after one of your site’s visitors clicks on a banner ad. By setting this option to Open in Parent Window, Open New Window, or Open in Popup, you can dictate how your visitors will view banner-related content.

  • Count: This option sets the number of banner ads to display in the module at a time. The default setting is one. The maximum number of banners the Banners module can display is ten.

  • Client: This option sets a client for the Banners module. You can select a client from the drop down list. If you chose to install Joomla’s sample information, Joomla will be included in your list of clients. If you wish to include more clients, you do so with Banner Client Manager.

  • Category: This option sets the category for the Banners module. To create more categories, you must once again turn to Banner Client Manager.

  • Search by Tags: This option allows you to select banners by matching the banner’s meta tags to words found on the pages you want to display the banners on.

  • Randomize: This option allows you to set the order in which banners will be displayed.

  • Header Text: This option allows you enter text to be displayed before the banner group.

  • Footer Text: This option allows you enter text to be displayed after the banner group.

Below the Basic Options pane is the Advanced Options pane.

  • Module Class Suffix: Now this is neat! This option enables you — if you possess the skill set to create custom CSS, that is — to create and identify a new CSS style that applies just to this module.

  • Caching: This option lets you set whether or not the module’s content will be cached. Setting this option’s drop-down menu to Use Global will use the cache settings from your Joomla site’s Global Configuration control panel.

  • Cache Time: The number of minutes between times when the module’s cache refreshes.
