Joomla CMS: Make Menu Items Visible Only to Logged-in Users

By Seamus Bellamy, Steve Holzner

In Joomla, you can restrict menu items only to those users who are logged in (registered). If your website has some content that anyone can see and other content that should be reserved for authorized eyes only, go ahead and fine-tune the access privileges.

Suppose that you want to allow only logged-in users to access a certain article. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Menus→Menu Manager in any back-end page to open Menu Manager.

    The Menu Manager opens.

  2. Click the Menu Items tab located near the top-left corner of the Menu Manager window.

    Menu Manager: Menu Items opens.

  3. Open the menu item that links to the article you want to change by clicking it.

  4. Make a selection in the Access drop-down menu.

For this exercise, select Registered (logged-in users only).

  5. Click the Save button.

Now any user who isn’t logged into your site won’t be able to access the article through the menu item.

Although you may have restricted the menu item from displaying the article to anyone but registered users, the article may still be found by your site’s visitors through another menu item or as the result of a site search. To completely restrict access to the article, you need to change the Access level of the article itself.
