How to Link Menu Items to Categories in Joomla

By Seamus Bellamy, Steve Holzner

For categorized articles in Joomla to be seen by users of your website, you will need to link your Joomla menu items to Joomla categories that contain the articles you want to publish. By connecting the category to the menu item, all articles in the category are available through the associated menu item.

To create a new menu item that points to a specific category on your site, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Menu Manager icon in the control panel or choose Menus→Menu Manager.

    Menu Manager opens.

  2. Click the Menu Item tab in the top-left corner of the Menu Manager Window.

    Menu Item Manager opens.

  3. Click the New button.

Joomla displays the New Menu Item page.

  4. Click the Select button next to the Menu Item Type field.

For this exercise, choose Category Blog.

This option doesn’t actually create a blog. It’s Joomla’s way of saying that each article in a given category will be summarized (the first sentence or two will be displayed) and that you can add a Read More link so that users can read the rest of the article.

  5. Enter a title for the new menu item in the Title text box.

For this exercise, type Ice Cream Flavors.

  6. Choose a status from the State drop-down menu.

    For this exercise, choose Published.

  7. Choose a viewing option from the Access drop-down menu.

    For this exercise, choose Public.

  8. Choose a location from the Menu Location drop-down menu.

For this exercise, choose About Joomla.

  9. Choose a parent category from the Parent Item drop-down menu.

    For this exercise, choose Menu_Item_Root.

  10. In the Required Settings section on the right side of the page, choose Cartons from the Category drop-down menu.

  11. Click the Save & Close button.

The Edit Menu Item page closes, and you return to the Menu Items page. Now, search for your newly created Menu Item by entering Ice Cream Flavors into the Menu Items page Filter field and clicking the search button.

  12. View the front page in a web browser, or click the View Site link at the top of any back-end page.

You see the new menu item: Ice Cream Flavors.

  13. Click the new menu item to display the new category page.

If you scroll up and down the page, you can see all the articles: Chocolate Ice Cream, Vanilla Ice Cream, and even Sardine Ice Cream. Looks good, right?
