How to Enable Emoticons in Joomla CMS

By Seamus Bellamy, Steve Holzner

Add a touch of emotion to your text in Joomla by using emoticons. First, you first have to enable TinyMCE’s extended feature set in Joomla. Here’s how:

  1. Choose Extensions →Plug-in Manager in any back-end page.

    The Plug-in Manager page opens.

  2. Locate the column titled Editor – TinyMCE. Click the row’s title.

The Plug-in Manager: TinyMCE page opens.

  3. Under the Basic Options pane, set the Functionality drop-down list to Extended.

  4. Click the Save & Close button.

Did your tweak of Joomla’s TinyMCE interface work? To find out, select ContentArticle Manager from any back-end page. Once the page opens, find and open the Privacy Policy article either through Article Manager’s built-in search filter or by scrolling down the page and locating it manually. You’ll find that the options offered by the TinyMCE interface have been significantly expanded. Great work!

Now that TinyMCE’s extended functionality has been enabled, let’s get to work. To add an emoticon to the Privacy Policy article, position the insertion point at the end of the text and then click the Emoticons button in the middle toolbar of the TinyMCE editor to open the Insert Emotion dialog box.

Click the emoticon you want to use to insert it into the text. Now, click Save & Close. Once you’ve returned to the Article Manager: Articles page, click the View Site link at the top of the page to navigate to your Joomla site’s front end.
