How to Download a Joomla Extension

By Seamus Bellamy, Steve Holzner

Of the thousands of Joomla extensions available on the Joomla Extension Directory (JED), you’ve selected one that is perfect for your site. Now all you have to do is download it.

To download an extension from the Joomla extensions site, follow these steps:

  1. On the extension’s listing page, click the link of an extension that interests you.

You go to a page on the extension developer’s site that lists the files available for download for the chosen extension.

  2. Click the link for the package you want to download.

For this exercise, select Akeeba Backup Core.

  3. Click the download link or button.

Your browser opens a download dialog box. If you’re using Internet Explorer or Firefox, a security bar may appear at the top of the browser window, blocking the download for security reasons. Right-click the security bar, and choose Download File from the shortcut menu.

  4. Save the compressed extension file to your hard drive.

If you’re downloading a module file, the filename often starts with mod_.

In order for Joomla to install a new extension, the file must be in ZIP format. For those of you using OS X as an operating system, you may find that the file is automatically decompressed once you’ve finished downloading it. Don’t Panic: If this happens, simply right-click on the decompressed file folder and recompress it.
