How to Create Submenus in Joomla Content Management System

By Seamus Bellamy, Steve Holzner

Joomla’s default implementation with sample data comes with some menu items that you can rename and use as your own. If you want a second-level menu item, you will need to have categories in place with associated articles. And, of course, you will need a parent menu. Then you can create a submenu to which you can associate the categorized articles.

To add the submenu items, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Menus→Menu Manager in any back-end page to open Menu Manager.

  2. In the row of the menu that you want to use as the parent menu, click the icon in the Menu Item(s) column.

For this exercise, select Main Menu.

The Menu Item Manager page opens.

  3. Click New.

The New Menu Item page opens.

  4. Click the Select button next to Menu Item Type, and select a type.

For this exercise, select Single Article.

  5. Enter a title for the submenu item in the Title text box.

For this exercise, type SuperDuperMega Bar.

The Article Selection page opens and you can add an article. After you have made your selection, the Article Selection page closes automatically, returning you to the New Menu Item page.

  6. From the Parent Item drop-down menu, choose the new submenu item’s parent menu.

  7. Click the Save & Close button.

The new submenu item is saved, and the Menu Items page opens.

  8. Repeat the previous steps to create as many submenu items as you want.

For this exercise, create two more submenu items: Tutti Frutti Bar and Broccoli Bar.

  9. Click the Preview link to view your site.

Clicking any of the new submenu items takes you directly to the page to which the item is linked.
