How to Create and Format Tables and Columns in Joomla Articles

Suppose you’re using the Joomla content management system (CMS) to create a school site, and you want to list the top honor-roll students in an article. How about creating a table that lists them like this?

Create a table in an article

To place a table in an article, follow these steps:

  1. With the article open in the article editor, click Insert a New Table, located on the far-left side of the second toolbar.

    The Insert/Modify Table dialog box opens.

  2. In the General properties tab, set the options you want to use.


  3. Click the Insert button.

    A blank table grid appears in your article.

  4. Type the table text in the table cells.


Format a table

That’s good so far, but now you want to apply some formatting — to make the column heads to stand out, maybe, and to add a border. To format a table, follow these steps:

  1. Select the top row of the new table, and click the Table Row Properties button from the toolbar second to the bottom of the TinyMCE editor.

    The Table Row Properties dialog box opens.

  2. From the Row in Table Part drop-down menu, choose Table Head; then click the Update button.


    Joomla converts the headers in the top row of your table to actual table headers (that is, the <th> tag will be used for the headers, not the <td> tag).

  3. To give the table a visible border, click inside the table and then click the Table Cell Properties button in the middle toolbar of the editor.

    The Table Cell Properties dialog box opens.

    By default, all table borders are white, so they won’t show up on a web page that has a white background. But you can change that setting.

  4. Select the Advanced tab, click the Border Color box, and choose a new color from the pop-up color palette.

    You may want to choose black (hex code #000000).

  5. To apply the new color to the border of all cells, switch back to the General tab and choose Update All Cells in Table from the drop-down menu in the bottom-left corner of the dialog box.


  6. Click the Update button.

    As you can see in the Article Text pane, your table now boasts some stylish black borders.
