How to Create a Custom HTML Module in Joomla

By Seamus Bellamy, Steve Holzner

One of the great things about Joomla is how incredibly flexible it is. The CMS’s default installation includes 23 different modules to help you make your site run smoothly.Sometimes, however, you may want to add a function to your website that those 23 modules just won’t cover.

Under such circumstances, you may want to consider the use a Custom HTML module, which in reality should have been called a free-form or custom module, as you don’t necessarily need to work with HTML to use it.

Whether you need to display snippets of code from another web page, feel like displaying contact information for your site’s administrative team, want to display a photo on your Joomla site without embedding it into any of your articles, or any number of other functions, a Custom HTML module is the way to go.

In order to create a Custom HTML module that displays your business’s hours of operation, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Extensions→Module Manager in any back-end page.

    The Module Manager page opens.

  2. Click New

    The Module Type list opens.

  3. Select Custom HTML.

The Module Type list closes. Module Manager: Module Custom HTML opens.

  4. In the Title text box, type Hours of Operation.

  5. In the Custom Output pane at the bottom of the page, enter some HTML code, text, or an image.

For this exercise enter the following text: Monday – Friday: 9am – 5pm Saturday – Sunday: Closed

  6. Click the Save or Save and Close button.

Joomla saves the new module and returns you to Module Manager.

Now that you’ve saved your new Custom HTML module, navigate to a page that you’ve ordered the module to load to in order to see your business’s hours of operation.
