How to Add an RSS Feed to Your Joomla Website

By Seamus Bellamy, Steve Holzner

The Feed Display module in Joomla allows you to display other sites’ RSS feeds on your site, which is a great way to add value. Suppose that you have a site about hamsters. If you can find another site that has an RSS feed about hamsters, displaying that feed on your site will keep your content from being static.

You can find RSS feeds in hundreds of thousands of places on the Internet; just click the XML or RSS button that you see on various sites.

To add an RSS feed to your Joomla site, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Extensions→Module Manager in any back-end page to open Module Manager.

  2. Click Feed Display module to open the module’s administration page.

  3. From the Position drop-down menu, pick a location on your page to display your RSS feed.

For this exercise, pick position-9, which places the RSS feed in the bottom-left corner of the page.

  4. In the Published section of the Details pane, choose Published from the drop-down menu.

Depending on the position location you pick, your ordering options may be limited.

  5. From the Menu Assignment pane, choose what pages you want the module to appear on.

For this exercise, select On All Pages from the Menu Assignment drop-down menu.

  6. Locate the Feed URL text box, located in the Basic Options pane. Enter the URL of the feed you want to add to your site.

If you want to add the RSS feed for USA Today’s Money section, for example, enter this URL:

  7. Click the Save button.

Now that you have saved the module’s settings, you can turn your attention to deciding on the module’s ordering.

  8. View your site in a browser.

You find the RSS feed added to your site.
