Configuring Your Drupal Storefront

By Lynn Beighley, Seamus Bellamy

While your Drupal storefront site is practically ready to work after you add products, you also have some ways to customize your site to make it more attractive to customers. There are more than 100 configuration options buried under the Store→Configuration menus; some of the most important ones to know are covered below.

Cart settings

Cart settings control how the shopping cart behaves. To modify them, choose Store→Cart Settings. Here are the ones you’re most likely to change:

  • Minimum Order Subtotal: Use this to set a minimum order amount a shopper must meet before the order can be submitted.

  • Cart Lifetime for Anonymous Users: If a shopper adds items to his shopping cart, but isn’t signed in on your site, this duration controls how long the items in his cart will remain there. If he browses to a different site but returns within four hours, his items will still be in the cart.

  • Cart Lifetime for Authenticated Users: If a shopper adds items to her shopping cart, and is logged in, items in her cart will remain for a year. Each time she logs in, she can click the shopping cart link and see them.

Checkout settings

Checkout settings control the checkout process. To modify them, choose Store→Checkout settings.

  • Enable Checkout: Located on the Basic settings of the Checkout settings screen. If you eventually use a third-party vendor to manage the transaction, you need to deselect this option.

  • Instruction Messages: Under Instruction Messages, you can customize the text of the Checkout Instructions and Checkout Review Instructions the shopper sees during the checkout process.

  • Completion Messages: Under Completion Messages, you can customize the text of a number of different messages the shopper sees after he completes the checkout process.

  • Address Fields: Click the Address Fields tab. You can modify the Title of any of the fields in the address section of the checkout form. You can also specify whether they’re enabled and if they are required.

Country settings

Country settings allow you to set up the checkout form for other countries. To modify them, choose Store→Country Settings. You can import countries into your list.

When a shopper reaches the Contact form, he or she chooses a country from a drop-down list. The Country settings control which countries appear in that drop-down list. After the shopper changes the country, the values in the State/Province drop-down list change accordingly.

Order settings

Order settings control what happens to the order after the checkout is completed. To modify them, choose Store→Configuration→Order Settings.

  • Number of Orders on Overview Screen: Controls the number of orders you see when you choose Store→Orders.

  • Order Statuses: Under the Workflow tab, you can customize the text of the order statuses. You can also add custom ones.

Product settings

Product settings control the appearance of the information on product listings pages. To modify these settings, choose Store→Product Settings, and then click the Edit tab near the upper-right of the screen.

  • Display an Optional Quantity Field in the Add to Cart Form: Selecting this check box places a quantity field on the product listing pages. You should select this check box. Click Save Configuration to enable this option.

  • Product Fields: You control which fields show up on the product listing pages. If the products you sell should display their dimensions or weight, here’s the place to add them. Select the appropriate check boxes and then click Save Configuration.

Store settings

The Store settings page controls many of the overall store settings. To modify these settings, choose Store→Configuration→Store Settings.

  • Basic Information and Store Address tabs: There are a number of fields you should enter data into on these forms to give shoppers more information about your store. If possible, provide contact info for your store on the Store Address tab.

  • Footer Message for Store Pages: Click the Display Settings tab to find this option. You can remove the Ubercart messages, although if you don’t have to, it’s nice to leave them at the bottom of your site.

  • Currency Format tab: This form allows you to change the default currency.

  • Weight Format, Length Format, and Date Format tabs: You can change the units of measurement for weight and length, and the date format.
