Adding New Drupal Themes - dummies

You can change the appearance of your site with just a few clicks when you add a new Drupal theme. Drupal 7 makes installing new themes so easy, there’s no reason not to go find several and install them.

    Finding new themes

New themes, like modules, are located To find Drupal 7-compatible themes, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Appearance→Install New Theme.

    This opens the theme installation form with a link to the themes directory on


  2. Click the Themes link.

    This takes you to the theme search form.

  3. Choose 7.x from the Filter by Compatibility drop-down list and click Search.

Find some themes you like and copy the paths to their .zip files, just as if you were installing modules. At the time of this writing, there aren’t very many Drupal 7 themes available, but some you may want to try are

    Installing themes

If you’ve decided to install the themes mentioned, you should have the URLs to four .zip files:

Keep in mind that the filenames will change as themes undergo more development. By the time this book is in your hands, these .zip files may be out of date. Visit the themes’ home pages to get the latest file URLs.

To install each of these themes, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Appearance→Install New Theme.

  2. Paste one of the .zip file URLs in the Install from a URL text box.

  3. Click Install.

  4. Click Enable Newly Added Themes link and repeat Steps 1–3 for the rest of the .zip URLs.

Your new themes now appear at the bottom of the Appearance page.


Themes you add are disabled by default. To try a new theme out, click the Enable and Set Default link underneath its thumbnail.
