How to Use the InDesign CS5 Story Editor - dummies

By Jennifer Smith, Christopher Smith, Fred Gerantabee

The InDesign Creative Suite 5 story editor lets you view a story outside tiny columns and format the text as necessary. With the story editor, you don’t have to work within text frames to edit your text.

1Find a piece of text that you want to edit and select its text frame with the Selection tool.

A bounding box with handles appears around the text frame.

2Choose Edit→Edit in Story Editor or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Y (Windows) or Cmd+Y (Mac).

The story editor opens in a new window directly in the InDesign workspace. The style of each paragraph appears in the Information pane on the left.

3Edit the story in the window as necessary and click the Close button when you finish.

In the window, your story appears in one block of text which should be easier to edit. You can apply paragraph styles to the text in the story editor if you like, and they will appear in an Information pane on the left side of the workspace.

Notice that tables are now visible in the story editor. Click the small table icon to collapse and expand the table in the story editor.
