How to Stop Your Dog from Digging in Your Yard

Some dog breeds are bred to root out underground dwellers, so recognize that from your dog’s perspective, digging holes in your yard is her job — and part of her drive to hunt prey.

The cure to digging is rather simple: Don’t leave your dog unattended in the yard for lengthy periods.

Your other task is to provide alternatives for the energy and the instinct. Make sure your dog gets enough exercise, and give her opportunities to dig in approved locations — a nearby woods, or, if you’re very indulgent and understanding, create a small fenced-in area in your yard and give your dog permission to dig there but nowhere else.
