Common Terms Used by Online Fertility Support Groups

If you’re having trouble conceiving you may be setting out on a journey of assisted conception. Online fertility forums can help you feel that you’re not alone, especially if you find it hard to talk to family and friends, or if you prefer to remain anonymous. Here are several fertility-related terms you may encounter in online forums:

  • AF: ‘Aunt Flo’, your period or start of the menstrual cycle.

  • BBT: Basal body temperature.

  • BD: Baby dance, also known as baby sex or intercourse.

  • BFP, BFN: Big fat positive, big fat negative. Refers to the results of an HPT.

  • CD: Cycle day. Cycle day 1 is considered the first day of your period.

  • Cycle buddy: Another woman whose treatment cycle coincides with yours and who is trying to conceive at the same time.

  • DD/DS: Darling daughter or darling son.

  • DE: Donor egg.

  • DH: Darling husband.

  • DR: Down-regulation: Drugs that ‘switch off’ a woman’s hormones and put her into a temporary menopausal state before taking follicle-stimulating drugs as part of an IVF or ICSI cycle.

  • DS: Donor sperm – not to be confused with darling son! The context should differentiate!

  • Embies: Embryos (fertilised eggs).

  • Follies: Follicles that contain a woman’s eggs.

  • Frosties: Frozen embryos.

  • HPT: Home pregnancy test.

  • M/C: Miscarriage.

  • O: Ovulation.

  • OPK: Ovulation predictor kit.

  • ++++: Positive result.

  • Stims: Fertility medications that stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs.

  • Stimming: Taking fertility medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs.

  • 2WW: Two week wait. Describes the period between ovulation and sex (or embryo transfer) and a pregnancy test.

  • U/S: Ultrasound scan.
