How to Host Network Address Translation (NAT) on Lion Server

By John Rizzo

If you’re not using network address translation (NAT) on another device to connect your network to the Internet, you can run it on Lion Server in conjunction with Lion Server’s firewall. You use Server Admin and the Gateway Setup Assistant.

To configure NAT with Server Admin, follow these steps:

  1. Open Server Admin and select the server in the left column.

  2. Click the Settings icon in the toolbar and then click the Services tab.

  3. Select the NAT check box and then click the Save button.

To configure NAT with the Gateway Setup Assistant, do the following:

  1. In Server Admin, click the triangle next to your server in the left column to expand the list of services.

  2. Select NAT from the list.

  3. Click the Overview icon in the toolbar.

  4. Click the Gateway Setup Assistant button in the lower right.

The assistant takes you through the steps for configuring NAT and related services while providing explanatory text about port forwarding or just port forwarding without NAT. Here, the assistant configures DHCP and turns on the firewall and DNS, if necessary, as well as VPN, if you desire.
