IT Help Desk Jobs: Help Desk Institute

By Tyler Regas

One place you can start gaining the knowledge you need for an IT help desk job that offers a great deal of resources is HDI, the Help Desk Institute, an organization for professionals working in the IT industry and whose focus is help desk services and operations. You can find HDI online at. HDI’s resources are available only through subscription, but it’s well worth the cost. As of 2014, these are some of the available subscription packages (all fees are annual dues):

  • Student ($35): Gives you access to all of the same features as the Resources package, but at a dramatically reduced rate.

  • Local Chapter ($75): The most basic package, offers access to the SupportWorld online magazine, peer forums, local meetings, and other features.

  • Resources ($195): Offers access to all the features of the Student package, including all the Local Chapter package features and discounts to conferences.

  • Professional ($495): Adds certification and training discounts and other features.

  • Professional Plus ($795): Adds discounts on additional Professional accounts as well as one Professional account you can give to someone you believe would benefit from membership.

HDI is an interesting organization whose goals are specifically focused on the help desk, but HDI explains it better in this quote about what HDI is from its website:

In 1989, HDI became the first membership association and certification body created for the technical service and support industry. Through the years, HDI has remained the source for professional development by offering resources that enhance the soft skills needed to provide exceptional service management and customer service. To put it simply, HDI helps the helpers.
