Selecting an Organization with the Right Pace and Networking Job
Which type of organization has the right environment for the networking professional you are, and how can you tell what the company you’re considering is like? Some organizations race along at the speed of light, and others crawl at a snail’s pace.
You need to be honest with yourself, consider situations you’ve encountered in the past, and think about what you liked and disliked about each one. If you enjoy chaos, energy, and unpredictability, you might be ideal for a startup or a rapidly growing high-tech company.
If you prefer lower energy, calm, structure, and predictability, you may be better suited for a more conservative organization that’s not experiencing dizzying growth or wrenching change. Public service or an organization experiencing little growth might be better for you.
Before you apply to different organizations, research them to learn about their recent history, so that you can get an idea of their pace. You might look at press releases on an organization’s website to get an idea of recent events and changes. If you are fortunate enough to get a phone screen interview (or further), ask enough questions to get an idea of what it’s like to work in the company. Interviews are a two-way street, so it’s within your right to ask about work pace and the rate of change in the organization.
