Hauler is the term used to describe people who love to buy things, bring them home, and then record and discuss their finds (or shopping hauls) on video. Hauling videos are a combination Home Shopping Network and online product review.

Hauls started as a trend among teenagers, particularly girls. One of the most successful online haulers is Elle Fowler, who has the popular AllThatGlitters21 YouTube channel. Elle and her sister started the channel in 2008.

Since then, the beauty and fashion vlog (video blog) has expanded to more than 1.2 million subscribers and over 160 million video views. The AllThatGlitters21 brand also has more than 250,000 followers on Twitter, over 170,000 fans on Facebook, and nearly 243,000 followers on Instagram. Not bad!

So, how do you make money showing off your favorite shopping finds? Most haulers earn money from advertising that appears on their YouTube channel (when people watch the videos) and from retailers paying for endorsements or product reviews. The hauling gig isn’t only for teens. Moms, techies, and others are now in on the game.

As with any trend, this one has the possibility of diminishing. But that’s no reason not to try it while it’s still hot. And don’t be afraid to use this trend as the basis for discovering the next big thing.
