How to Manage OneNote 2013 Notebooks with SkyDrive

SkyDrive is cloud-accessible, even if you don’t have a SkyDrive app installed on the device. This makes it easy to manage OneNote 2013 notebooks from any device that has internet access.

How to manage notebooks with SkyDrive on the web

You can access the service from whatever device you’re using as long as it supports a functional web browser.

SkyDrive on the web is the single most-functional interface the service has available on any platform. Use SkyDrive on the web on computers that don’t have SkyDrive available or if you want to get more storage or configure advanced options.

Here’s how to access SkyDrive using a web browser:

  1. Fire up your favorite web browser and navigate to Skydrive.

    The SkyDrive log in page appears.

  2. Input your username and password and select Sign In.

    Your SkyDrive interface appears.


Following are some notes on using SkyDrive for the web that differentiate it from the other interfaces:

  • Chat: Here you can access Windows Live chats and Facebook chats if you have Facebook tied to your Microsoft account.

  • Options: Here you can access the following options that you can’t access in any other interface for SkyDrive:

    • Manage Storage/Upgrade: Here you can get more storage if the free 7GB you get aren’t enough.

    • Office File Formats: Decide between Microsoft and Open Document formats for new Excel, Word, and PowerPoint docs.

    • People Tagging: Decide who can tag you or others in your photos.

How to manage OneNote notebooks with SkyDrive for iOS

SkyDrive for iOS devices allows you to access your files from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch devices. After signing in, SkyDrive appears with the Settings menu open.

The interface will look decidedly smushed on an iPhone or iPod touch in comparison to on an iPad, but the app includes the same features.


Note the following when working with SkyDrive on your iOS device:

  • View buttons: Across the middle of the bottom bar of the app, you see four buttons; you can use the first three buttons to change your file view. The three buttons in the middle of this lower bar allow you to see your files. From left to right, these buttons are Files, Recent, and Shared.

  • Settings: The gear wheel button at the very right of the bottom bar is the ill-named Settings button; there is only one item on this list that you can change. Here you see which account you’re in, your available storage, and links to the app’s privacy statement, terms, and help resources. The only item you can change is under Photo Uploads.

  • Edit/add button: The button at the upper right of the SkyDrive interface lets you edit or add files. Choosing to add a file allows you to create folders, take new photos to add using the built-in camera, and choose existing photos to upload from your device.

    Most of the file-editing features are actually available when you tap a file (see the following bullet) — using this option only allows you to move or delete files, but this is the only place where you can do so with multiple files. Use the radio buttons to select files and then tap the Move or Delete button to perform that action.

  • File options: Tapping a file opens it in its own screen. Tap the screen, and you’ll see buttons appear at the top and bottom of the screen: The left-facing arrow at the upper left takes you back to the main SkyDrive interface, whereas the four buttons at the bottom of the screen let you work with the file.

    From left to right, the buttons on the bottom of the screen let you share a file, change its permissions, copy a hyperlink for it to the Clipboard (choose from a link that allows viewing only or viewing and editing), delete the file, move the file, or either rename the file or open it in another app.

    The onscreen buttons disappear after a moment — just touch the screen again to bring them back.

How to manage OneNote notebooks with SkyDrive for Android

SkyDrive on Android is fairly basic, but you can perform most basic management services for your notes using the app. After you set up the app from the Google Play store, you must log in with your Microsoft account. The SkyDrive app interface appears.


Just as with the iOS version of SkyDrive, the Android app appears larger on a tablet, but the functions are the same.

Keep the following in mind when working with the SkyDrive Android app:

  • View buttons: In the blue bar at the top is a drop-down list that allows you to switch views between your main files, recent documents, and documents shared with you.

  • Function buttons: The icons across the bottom allow you to perform various functions such as switching between list and thumbnails views, uploading files, creating folders, refreshing your view, and viewing settings. Settings let you see which account you’re in, available storage, and links to the app’s privacy statement, terms, and help resources. You can change the upload or download settings depending on whether you want your photos full size.

  • File management: Tap a file, and it will open in full-screen mode with a link at the top showing the filename that doubles as a Back button and five icons across the bottom that allow you to delete, copy a link to, download, share, or rename a file.

    Downloaded files will be stored in the SkyDrive folder on your phone’s SD card if your phone has one or on an internal SD card if it doesn’t have one, as is the case with the Nexus 4. You can choose the link you copy so that the recipient can only view the file or can edit as well as view it.
