How to Set Internet App Controls and Settings on Your Samsung Galaxy Tab S

By Dan Gookin

More options and settings and controls exist for the Internet app than just about any other app on a Galaxy Tab. It’s complex. Rather than bore you with every dangdoodle detail, here just a few of the options worthy of your attention.

Setting a home page

The home page is the first page you see when you start the Internet app, and it’s the first page that’s loaded when you fire up a new tab. To set a home page, heed these directions:

  1. Browse to the page you want to set as the home page.

  2. Tap the Action Overflow icon and choose Settings.

  3. On the left side of the screen, choose Set Home Page.

  4. On the right side of the screen, choose Current Page.

The home page is set.

If you want your home page to be blank (not set to any particular web page), choose Other in Step 4. In the text box on the Set card, type about:blank. Tap the OK button.

Clearing your web history

When you don’t want the entire Internet to know what you’re looking at on the web, open an incognito tab. When you forget to do that, follow these steps to clear one or more web pages from the browser history:

  1. Tap the Bookmarks icon.

  2. Tap the History tab.

  3. Touch the Edit button.

  4. Long-press a web page entry to select it.

  5. Tap other items to select them as well.

  6. Tap the Delete (trash can) icon atop the screen.

    The evidence is erased.

Each time you do this, remind yourself, “Next time, I’ll remember to use the incognito tab.” web pages you visit while incognito are not recorded in the browser’s history.

Changing the way the web looks

No matter which size Galactic tablet you own, you have several ways to improve the way the web looks. First and foremost, don’t forget that you can orient the device horizontally or vertically, which rearranges the way a web page is displayed.

From the Settings screen, you can also adjust the zoom setting used to display a web page. Heed these steps when using the Internet app:

  1. Tap the Action Overflow icon and choose Settings.

  2. On the left side of the screen, choose Screen and Text.

  3. On the right side of the screen, use the Text Scaling slider to adjust the text scaling.

You can spread your fingers to zoom in on any web page.

Setting privacy and security options

As far as the Internet app’s settings go, most of the security options are already enabled, including the blocking of pop-up windows (which normally spew ads).

If information retained on the tablet concerns you, you can clear it when you use the Internet app. Obey these steps:

  1. Tap the Action Overflow icon and choose Settings.

  2. Choose Privacy from the left side of the screen.

  3. Remove check marks by the items Remember Form Data and Remember Passwords.

  4. Tap the Delete Personal Data item.

  5. Place check marks by each item on the Delete Personal Data card.

  6. Tap the Done button.

With regard to general online security, always be smart and think before doing anything questionable on the web. Use common sense. One of the most effective ways that the Bad Guys win is by using human engineering to try to trick you into doing something you normally wouldn’t do, such as click a link to see a cute animation or a racy picture of a celebrity or a politician. As long as you use your noggin, you should be safe.
