When to Use Google+ in Your Social Marketing Campaign

By Shiv Singh, Stephanie Diamond

When marketing a brand, you really need to be careful of the content you use in social media, like Google+, for the world to see. As important it is to have a strong social media presence, if you open an account with a social network, promote it, and then never use it, the resulting account quickly falls out of date.

That doesn’t look good for you or the brand — it looks like you either don’t care about the account or can’t find the time for it, and the brand appears to lack relevance and popularity. So before you take on Google+, be sure you have the time to devote to your web presence there and keep your page from becoming a virtual ghost town.

Here are several reasons to consider using Google+:

  • Do you want a better presence on the search engines?

Being a part of the Google+ community means your brand is weighed heavier in the top-secret algorithm Google uses to determine where a company or site lands in search engine results. Using Google+ is an easy way to get closer to the top.

  • Do you want additional ways to interact with your existing customers and community?

Sure, you may be on other social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, but if you have the time and resources, why not add another service to the mix? By trial and error, you’ll find the social networks that produce the best results for your brand. And by best results, that means more visibility and interaction with current and potential customers. Who wouldn’t want that?

  • Do you want to interact in a space that isn’t saturated with other brands?

Although Google+ is a fantastic social networking resource, it is still very young. A huge number of companies haven’t jumped on the bandwagon because they’re busy with other sites. Why not step outside of the box and build a strong presence on Google+? When you become a Google+ pro, others may see you as a trailblazer, and chances are good they’ll head to Google+, too.

  • Would you like to share engaging content or updates with your community without starting a blog?

Google+ allows you to share your content with people who don’t have a Google+ account by entering their e-mail address in the Share menu. You can also notify people in your Circles that you’ve added new content, much like an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed on a blog.

  • Do you need an easy way for customers and potential customers to contact you?

Your customers can access you via phone, e-mail, or your website, but Google+ adds yet another way they can communicate their thoughts by commenting on your posts or adding posts via the Join the Discussion box that you can add to the top of your page. The About section of your Google+ profile also allows you to add further contact information.

Some obvious and not-so-obvious perks set Google+ apart from other social media services.

Google is a search engine giant, and you want your brand front and center in the search engine race. Google+ can help you with that because public profiles and updates are indexed for search and appear in web searches of your brand.

Therefore, someone using a search engine to seek more information on your brand could land on your Google+ page and see lots of engagement. And, keeping in line with Google’s uncluttered look, Google+ has no ads running. In other words, there is nothing to pull your fans’ attention away from your content!
