NLP enables you to understand what makes you tick: how you think, how you feel, how you make sense of everyday life in the world around you and how to take charge of your life. Business NLP can help you to get in touch with what you really want in the workplace, and to develop the flexibility and skills to achieve it.

The Four Pillars of Business NLP

Business NLP requires you to do some things that you may not be doing currently. These key points are summarised in the ‘Four Pillars of Business NLP’, which are:

  • Setting your goal. Know exactly what you want, in any situation. Once you have outcomes you stop thinking about the problems to overcome and focus on the future.

  • Using your senses. Pay close attention to the world around you. As you develop your sensory awareness find out much more about how you and others act and react – and make productive change.

  • Behaving flexibly. Keep on changing what you do until you get what you want, and remember, the path that leads to realising your goals is not always a straight one.

  • Building relationships. Others contribute to you achieving what you want in life. As you learn how to create and deepen rapport you’ll discover even more success.

Business NLP Principles

Ten core principles underlie the thinking and approach of Business NLP. Getting the full benefit from them requires you to assume that each principle is true. The principles are as follows:

  • The map is not the territory.

  • People respond as a result of their maps.

  • Every behaviour has a positive intention.

  • There is no failure, only feedback.

  • The meaning of the communication is the response it gets.

  • You cannot not communicate.

  • People have all the resources they need.

  • If what you are doing is not working, do something different.

  • In any system the person with the most flexibility controls the system.

  • Choice is better than no choice.

Useful Metaprogram Patterns in Business NLP

In Business NLP, metaprograms are unconscious filters that people develop to allow themselves to handle the high level of information and stimuli they receive. Of all the metaprogram patterns, the following six make the most difference in business:

  • General/Specific

  • Proactive/Reactive

  • Toward/Away-From

  • Sameness/Difference

  • Options/Procedures

  • Internal/External

Logical Levels of Change in Business NLP

The Logical Level model in Business NLP contains a number of different levels, and a hierarchy which illustrates the relationship between the parts. Change can happen at one or more of six levels:

  • The environment level describes the situation. This level answers the questions where? when? and with whom?

  • The behaviour level refers to what people say and do within the environment. It answers the question what?

  • The capabilities level includes the skills and knowledge that direct people’s behaviour in the environment. This answers the question how?

  • The beliefs and values level encompasses those things that are true and important to people within the situation. They answer the question why?

  • The identity level is people’s sense of self or their roles. It answers the question who?

  • The purpose level is about how people connect to something bigger than themselves. It answers the question what for?
