This cast-on seems to have a lot of steps, but once you get the hang of it, the long-tail cast-on is fast and even.\nJust make sure you cast on loosely enough, or your sock will be inflexible at the top edge and might not fit over your foot!\nLocate your cast-on number on the chart below by finding your gauge along the left edge and the size needed along the top edge.\n\n\nGauge/Size\nChild M\nChild L/ W Sm\nW Med\nW Lrg/ M Sm\nM Med\nM Lrg\n\n\nCircumference (in.)\n6.5\n7.5\n8\n8.5\n9\n9.5\n\n\n5 (US 5-8 needles)\n32\n36\n40\n44\n48\n52\n\n\n6 (US 4-6 needles)\n40\n44\n48\n52\n56\n60\n\n\n7 (US 3-5 needles)\n\n\n52\n56\n60\n64\n68\n\n\n8 (US 1-3 needles)\n52\n56\n60\n64\n68\n72\n\n\n9 (US 0-2 needles)\n60\n68\n72\n76\n80\n84\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Begin by pulling a long tail from the end of the working yarn—the amount depends on the number of stitches that you need to cast on. \n\nA good general rule is 1 inch per stitch in worsted weight or DK yarn, more for bulky yarns, and less for finer yarns. For a sock, about one arm’s length should suffice.\n \n Make a slipknot using the end of the yarn not attached to the ball as the “short” end, and place the slipknot onto a knitting needle. \n\n \n Hold this needle in your right hand, allowing the two tails to hang straight down. Place your left index finger and thumb together and place them between the two tails. Grasp the two tails together and drop the left hand below the fingers.\n\n \n Open the index finger and thumb, separating the two strands of yarn. Bring the needle in your right hand down to the level of the left hand, and rotate the left hand so that the index finger and thumb point upward. \n\nThis is the starting position of the long-tail cast-on.\n \n Bring the right needle tip up under the closest strand of yarn (which loops around the thumb).\n\n \n Bring the right needle tip over the farthest strand of yarn (looped around the index finger).\n\n \n Bring the right needle tip along with the farthest strand of yarn through the loop created by the thumb.\n\n \n Drop the loop off the thumb and onto the right needle. One stitch has been cast on. Tighten this stitch on the right needle and return to the starting position.\n\n \n Repeat steps 5–8 until you have cast on the total number of stitches.\nAfter you cast on, join for working in the round and place a marker in the work to indicate the beginning of the round.\n \n","item_vector":null},"titleHighlight":null,"descriptionHighlights":null,"headers":null},{"objectType":"article","id":197716,"data":{"title":"Circular Knitting: How to Cast On","slug":"circular-knitting-how-to-cast-on","update_time":"2016-03-26T22:23:34+00:00","object_type":"article","image":null,"breadcrumbs":[{"name":"Home, Auto, & Hobbies","slug":"home-auto-hobbies","categoryId":33809},{"name":"Crafts","slug":"crafts","categoryId":33825},{"name":"Knitting & Crocheting","slug":"knitting-crocheting","categoryId":33826}],"description":"To cast on for circular knitting, you use the same sorts of cast-on stitches that you do for traditional straight knitting. But with circular knitting you do have to make some changes, depending on the kind of needle you use.\n\n Circular needle: Before you start to knit, make sure that the cast-on edge isn’t twisted around the needle; if you have stitches that spiral around the needle, you’ll feel like a cat chasing its tail when it comes time to find the bottom edge. The yarn end should be coming from the RH needle tip.\n\n \n Double-pointed needles: Casting on and getting started on a set of double-pointed needles can be a little trickier than using single-pointed needles. Instead of trying to cast all your stitches onto one small needle (which increases the likelihood that some will slip off the other end) or several separate needles (which leaves needles dangling and extra yarn at each needle change), cast the total number of stitches needed onto a single-pointed straight needle of the correct size. Then slip them purlwise onto your double-pointed needles, distributing them in equal or close-to-equal amounts and making sure that the stitches aren’t twisted around any of the needles. Leave one of the needles free to start knitting.\nIf you’re using a set of four double-pointed needles, use three needles for your stitches: Form them into a triangle with the yarn end at the bottom point. Save the fourth (empty) needle for knitting.
