How to Set Up a Google Account for an Android Phone

To get the most from your Android phone, you need a free Google account. You need a Google account because the Android operating system, which your phone uses, was developed by Google — and because your phone and the various Google services on the Internet work together to create an ideal, 21st century information resource.

Creating a Google account for your Android phone

If you don’t already have a Google account, run — don’t walk or trot — to a computer and follow these steps to create your own Google account:

  1. Open the computer’s web browser program.

  2. Visit the main Google page.

  3. Click the Sign In link.

Another page opens, where you can log in to your Google account, but you don’t have a Google account, so:

  4. Click the link to create a new account.

The link is typically found beneath the text boxes where you would log in to your Google account.

  5. Continue heeding the onscreen directions until you’ve created your own Google account.

Eventually, your account is set up and configured. Create a bookmark for your account’s Google page: Pressing Ctrl+D or Command+D does the job in just about any web browser.

Setting up a Google account on your phone

If you haven’t yet configured a Google account, continue with these steps:

  1. Go to the Home screen.

The Home screen is the main screen on your phone. You can always get there by pressing the Home soft button, found at the bottom of the touchscreen.

  2. Press the Menu soft button.

The Menu soft button is found at the bottom of the touchscreen. It may be labeled Menu or feature an icon.

  3. Choose the Settings command.

The Settings command allows you to access internal options, controls, and settings for configuring your Android phone.

  4. Choose Accounts or Accounts & Sync.

The title for the Accounts option varies, depending on your phone and which version of the Android operating system it uses.

  5. Choose Add Account.

A list of accounts that you can add appears.

  6. Choose Google.

  7. Work through the steps on the screen to sign into your Google account.

You need to type your Google username and password.

Wait while the phone contacts the Internet and synchronizes your Google account information.

  8. If prompted, ensure that check marks appear by the all the Data & Synchronization options.

By placing check marks by all items, you ensure that the phone completely synchronizes with all your Google account information.

  9. Touch the Finish button.

  10. Touch the Finish Setup button.

    You’re done.

Press the Home soft button to return to the Home screen.
