How to Scan Your Computer for Spyware with Windows Defender

6 of 10 in Series: The Essentials of Home Network Security

Windows Defender is configured by default to scan your computer daily for spyware, and to provide real-time protection (scan any program that attempts to install on your computer). To manually scan your computer, follow the steps below.

Depending on the contents of your hard drive, a manual scan could take only a few minutes or much longer.

1

Click the Start button and type Defender in the Search Programs and Files text box.

A list of search results appears.

2

Click Windows Defender in the search results.

Windows Defender is launched and the Windows Defender window appears.

3

Click the Scan button at the top of the window.

Windows Defender begins to scan your computer for spyware.

4

View the results of the scan.

Close the Windows Defender window when you're done.
