How to Copy Files to and from iWork for iPad
6 of 7 in Series: The Essentials of iWork for iPad
One of the features that makes iWork for iPad so successful is that the iWork team has made it so easy for you to move documents around and work on them in whatever environment you want. You can get to your documents, read and write them, and share them with people.
Copying a file into an iWork for iPad app
If you have a file on your Mac or on an iDisk or WebDAV server, you can copy it into an iWork app to work on it there. Of course, the document needs to be saved as a compatible file type. That means:
Numbers: .numbers, .xls, .xlsx
Keynote: .key, .ppt, .pptx
Pages: .pages, .doc, .docx
These are the primary document types. You can import other files, such as JPEG images, by adding them to your iPhoto library, music files in iTunes, and so forth.
From your documents page (My Documents, My Spreadsheets, or My Presentations), tap the Copy From button.
For iDisk or a WebDAV server, log in.
There is no login for iTunes because your account ID is stored and your iPad is paired with one and only one computer that runs iTunes.
Select the file you want.
Files that are dimmed out are not compatible with the app you're running. You will be warned if there are any errors.
Fix up any errors and then get to work.
Copying a file from an iWork for iPad app
If you work on your iPad, it's easy to transfer files from your iWork app onto your computer or some other device. To share a file you've created in iWork on your iPad, follow these steps:
From your documents page (My Documents, My Spreadsheets, or My Presentations), tap the Share button.
In addition to the ability to move files to iTunes, iDisk, and WebDAV, you also have the ability to e-mail a file and share it on iWork.com.
When you e-mail a file, the recipient can work on the file or place it on an iDisk or WebDAV server. Anyone with proper access (including you) can then copy it back into your or someone else's iWork for iPad app.
Choose the export format.
For an iDisk or WebDAV server, you may be prompted to log in.
