How to Connect to the Internet through Your Wireless Access Point

7 of 8 in Series: The Essentials of Setting Up a Wireless Network

After you install and configure the wireless access point for your home network, you're ready to connect your computer to your wireless network. If you’re connecting the computer you used to configure your wireless access point, you can disconnect the Ethernet network cable connecting your computer to your wireless access point (if applicable). You’re going wireless from here!

1

Open the Windows Control Panel, and then click Network and Internet.

The Network and Internet window appears.

2

Click Network and Sharing Center.

The Network and Sharing Center window appears.

3

Click Connect to a Network.

You'll see a pop-up screen appear in the lower-right corner of your screen.

4

On the pop-up screen, click your wireless network to expand it, and then click Connect.

The Connect to a Network dialog box appears.

5

Type your security key in the Security Key text box.

You can optionally select the Hide Characters check box to hide characters for your security key.

6

Next, your computer connects to your wireless network.

Your computer is now connected! The Network and Sharing Center shows your active networks.
