Condiments and Sauces to Enhance Meals

Condiments are seasonings or foods used to enhance meals. What’s a hot dog without mustard? French fries without ketchup? Having quality condiments and sauces on hand is always wise — you never know when a dish will need that extra zing.

Make sure to stock your pantry with these supporting players:

  • Dijon-style mustard: Good for adding to salad dressings, dips, and sauces and for garnishing hot or cold meats and sandwiches.

  • Ketchup: For hamburgers and as an ingredient in fish and barbecue sauces and baked beans.

  • Mayonnaise: A basic ingredient for many salad dressings, as well as meat and egg salads.

  • Mango or tomato chutney: Chutney is a sweetened fruit condiment for broiled chicken, lamb, pork, or duck.

  • Assorted relishes: Relishes such as corn, tomato, cranberry, and onion are good for spreading on cold sandwiches and grilled and roasted meats.

  • Dill and sweet pickles: For serving with sandwiches and for chopping into potato, chicken, and egg salads.

  • Horseradish: For sandwiches, salad dressings, raw oysters and clams, and certain cream and tomato-based sauces.

  • Pesto: For pasta, grilled meats, fish, poultry, or vegetables.

  • Salsa: With grilled meats and fish, omelets and other egg dishes, salads, and traditional Mexican foods.

  • Soy sauce: For marinades, salad dressings, stir-fries, sushi, and sauces.

  • Sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil: Enhance sauces (especially for pasta), tossed salads, and dressings.

  • Tabasco sauce or other hot sauce: For adding flavor and heat to savory dishes.

  • Worcestershire sauce: For hamburgers, steak, marinades, sauces, baked clams, and Bloody Marys.

Condiments such as relishes, jellies, pickles, and mayonnaise need to be refrigerated after you open them. A group that includes peanut butter, oil, and vinegar don’t require refrigeration after you open them.
