Jordan’s “lost” city of Petra—where Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was filmed— features deep canyons punctuated by dramatic architectural cliff carvings and dwellings. In this reverse silhouette, the dark canyon frames the long, vertical image of the entrance to the city for a mysterious, dramatic effect. The exposure was set for the sunlit city, which then underexposed the canyon walls.
