Here’s a diagram of what the aperture looks like at each f-stop (the specific size of the aperture). Oddly enough, the smaller the f-stop number, the larger the opening is on the aperture. So f/2.8 lets in a lot more light than f/11, and has a much shallower depth of field (how much of your photo is in focus).
