By default, the Windows 8.1 Search looks everywhere it can in order to find the largest number of matching results for a search. In most cases, you’ll probably want to see the maximum number of results. At other times, you may find it more convenient to limit the results to specific types or locations.

To narrow your results, click the down arrow next to Everywhere in the Search pane

This displays the drop-down list box.

You can click or tap the search icon to display a detailed list of search results even when you limit the search to specific types or locations.

Here are the results that Windows 8.1 returns for the preceding search when the search is limited to Settings.

Search results for the term “loc” only in Settings.

Depending on how many results are returned by your search term, you may need to scroll to the right on the search results page in order to view all those results.

If it seems as though your search results contain items that don’t match your search term, the extra items may be a result of a change to Search in Windows 8.1. The Windows 8.1 Search now looks inside of apps rather than simply looking at their names. This capability to search inside of apps generally returns many more results than the older search method.
