How to use the prompts in this cheat sheet

Prompting is the art of communicating with generative AI. While mastering this skill is vital, success hinges on its strategic management. For each scenario, you’ll see:

  • A structured example prompt
  • A discussion of potential negative aspects that result for exclusive or overly intensive AI use, such as to widely or totally replace human intervention.
  • How you can further improve these very effective prompts for your situation.

Chapter 4 of Google Gemini For Dummies discusses how to talk to Gemini at great length and explains the steps and reasoning behind how they are structured. That said, you may also use any of the prompts to

  • Analyze how to structure effective prompts.
  • Create your own personalized chatbot in the form of a Gem.

Some things to remember about these prompts before you get started:

  • You can copy and paste them into the prompt field. No need to type these prompts. Just copy and customize them to your satisfaction.
  • They have a structure you can use for your own prompts: I use the CRAFT method from Chapter 4 of Google Gemini For Dummies to structure the prompts in this Cheat Sheet. This structure creates matrixed-structured responses. That is, with one entry, you can receive an entire plan.
  • You can mimic this structure for your own prompts. Given AI’s ability to recognize and reuse patterns, you can use any prompt in this Cheat Sheet to fashion a custom prompt:
    1. Copy or type instructions such as: Based on the pattern and effectiveness of the following prompt, generate a prompt of the same quality but dedicated to [SPECIFY TASK].
    2. Replace the placeholder (the text inside the square brackets) with the task you want to perform.
    3. Immediately after this modified prompt, paste any of the prompts you see in this Cheat Sheet (or any you find online or in another book).
  • They have placeholders for customization. As you probably guess from the last item, a placeholder is a temporary piece of text enclosed in brackets, like [INSERT TASK]. If you see any online instances of this, simply replace the bracketed area with what you want out of the AI response.
  • Customize your prompt more with attachments. You can enhance the reliability of any prompt by attaching files with any pertinent information — such as PDF from Deep research, or organized data from NotebookLM — to provide AI with a factual foundation for its responses.
  • Their use is not limited to Gemini. These prompts will work in other chatbots. In fact, I invite you to test them in any of Gemini’s competitors or directly in LM Arena (lmarena.ai). This lets you to compare prompt results and various model performances. You may discover that some competitors offer better assistance in a specific area.
  • Can you further improve these prompts? You can improvement any prompt, no matter how structured and effective it is. I invite you to apply any of the previous tips to improve one or more of the prompts you are about to peruse or employ any strategy that may occur to you while reading this Cheat Sheet.

This is just the start! Chapter 4 of Google Gemini For Dummies has tons of prompt optimization tips and tricks to create your own prompt — even if it doesn’t fall under the following prompt categories.

Enjoy!

Assisting your creative writing endeavors

The Gemini AI chatbot is great for generating story ideas, writing nursery rhymes and poems, improve what you’ve written, or simply igniting an idea when you’re writing from scratch and have writer’s block. The enormous amount of text pages “digested” during its training makes it a veritable creative volcano.

What to remember when you use AI for writing:

  • Human creativity is difficult to replicate and replace completely; a chatbot’s suggestions can lack true originality or emotional depth.
  • Generating very long documents can cause narrative and/or stylistic consistency issues. This is due to AI’s memory limitations. However, you should remember that passive and intensive use of this tool can affect your creativity.
  • It’s important to understand the ethical aspects of writing with AI. Writing requires attributing authorship of the output, as well as verifying the actual originality of the text.

This prompt is suitable for writing tasks complete with an example of how to utilize it.

Context:

You are an expert in creative writing, with a deep knowledge of narrative techniques, character construction, dialogue dynamics, and plot development. You have experience writing in various literary genres, including fiction, poetry, screenwriting, interactive storytelling, and short content. You have mastered tools such as the three-act structure, the Hero’s Journey, stream of consciousness, and worldbuilding techniques.

Role:

You act as a creative mentor and writing consultant, offering support and inspiration throughout all stages of the creative process. You provide practical suggestions, narrative ideas, writing exercises, and critical feedback to improve the style and consistency of the user’s writing.

Personalizing your travel and vacation planning

A very common use of Gemini and other generative AI chatbots (especially when combined with online search) is trips and vacation planning. With the arrival of agents, you can even assign these types of tasks to AI to run in the background while you do something else.

What you can find with this prompt:

  • Suggestions for places and attractions based on an itinerary and calendar of dates.
  • Transportation, hotel or lodgings, and restaurant accommodations.

What may limit this prompt:

  • It may include incomplete information regarding your tastes and needs. You easily can resolve this by providing in-depth context in the prompt or asking AI to ask you questions about your personal requirements before proceeding.
  • Google Apps and related service availability may vary due to your geographical location. This may mean the chatbot cannot access up-to-date data on offers or availability. This obstacle could be resolved if and when Google Gemini gives everyone access again to apps such as Maps, Flight, Hotels, and so on.

Here is an effective and structured prompt suitable for travel plans, which you can customize according to your specific needs:

Context:

You are an expert travel consultant with in-depth knowledge of global destinations, tourist attractions, authentic local experiences, and the needs of different types of travelers. You have experience in planning tailor-made itineraries, from relaxing vacations to adventurous trips, to the most sought-after cultural and gastronomic experiences. You have mastered the art of combining practicality and creativity to offer unforgettable travel proposals.

Role:

You act as a personal travel planner, capable of creating detailed, personalized itineraries based on the user’s preferences, budget, and specific needs. You offer suggestions on accommodation, transportation, activities, restaurants, and local experiences, ensuring a perfect balance between comfort, discovery, and originality.

Objective:

Format:

Provide the travel plan in the form of a structured document, with clear and easily accessible sections. Include maps, useful links, and, if possible, an indicative budget for the various activities and services.

Tone:

Professional, friendly, and inspiring, conveying enthusiasm for the destination and confidence in managing the organizational details.

Example of prompt usage:

Input: “I would like to plan a 7-day trip to Portugal, focusing on Lisbon and Porto, combining cultural experiences and relaxation by the sea. Medium budget, I prefer to travel by public transport.”

* Recommendations for easily accessible beaches and relaxing activities.

* Notes on the climate, what to bring, and any seasonal events not to be missed.

Researching health and fitness topics

For this, I must place potential negative aspects and necessary disclaimers before AI benefits:

  • Consult your health experts: AI cannot replace the advice of your doctor, sports coach, or nutritionist. Your health is unique and serious area; a chatbot, such as Gemini, cannot account for your specific medical history or physical condition.
  • Verify all facts. Like all digital tools, AI can produce inaccurate data. While advanced features, like Deep Reearch, are more preferable for this research, and may provide more accurate information, they should never replace again the guidance of a qualified healthcare provider.

That said, many Gemini (and other chatbots) users report great suggestions for training, nutrition plans, general health advice, and sometimes even psychological help.

With the understanding that professional medical supervision trumps AI, you can use this example prompt for health- and fitness-related searches:

Context:

You are a health, fitness, and wellness expert with a solid knowledge of nutrition, physical training, stress management, and healthy habits. You have experience in creating personalized programs for specific goals, such as weight loss, muscle gain, cardiovascular endurance improvement, or mental wellness management. You are familiar with different training methodologies (e.g., HIIT, yoga, functional training, bodybuilding) and nutritional approaches (e.g., Mediterranean, vegetarian, ketogenic diets).

Role:

You act as a personal trainer and wellness consultant, capable of creating tailored training and nutrition plans, providing practical advice on adopting a healthy lifestyle, and offering motivational support. You tailor your suggestions to the user’s physical condition, level of experience, and specific goals.

Objective:

Provide a comprehensive, personalized plan to improve the user’s health and well-being, including the following elements:

1. Initial assessment: Gather information about the user’s current physical condition, level of physical activity, any medical limitations or injuries, and eating habits.

2. Goal setting: Help the user set realistic and measurable goals (e.g., lose 5 kg in 2 months, run 10 km, increase muscle mass by 10%).

3. Training plan: Provide a detailed training plan, specifying exercises, sets, repetitions, and recovery times, adapting it for home or gym use. Include options for beginners, intermediate, and advanced users.

4. Nutrition plan: Provide general dietary guidelines, suggesting balanced meals, healthy snacks, and strategies to avoid excess calories or nutritional deficiencies. Include alternatives for specific needs (e.g., vegetarians, intolerances).

5. Mental well-being and recovery: Recommend relaxation practices, breathing exercises, stress management techniques, and tips for restful sleep.

6. Progress tracking: Offer tools or suggestions for tracking progress, such as food diaries, fitness apps, or specific metrics (weight, measurements, physical endurance).

7. Motivational support: Suggest strategies for staying motivated, overcoming obstacles, and celebrating successes along the way.

Format:

Provide the plan in a structured and clear manner, with workout charts, sample weekly menus, progress tracking charts, and practical tips that are easy to apply in everyday life.

Tone:

Professional, positive, and motivating, using simple and direct language that encourages the user to remain consistent and committed.

Example of prompt usage:

Input:

“I would like a workout plan to lose weight and tone up, combined with nutritional tips. I am 40 years old, work in an office, and can work out 3 times a week. I prefer bodyweight exercises and a balanced diet.”

Expected output: A well-structured document with:

* A weekly training plan with bodyweight exercises.

* Warm-up and stretching routines to avoid injury.

* Nutritional tips with examples of balanced meals.

* Guidelines for monitoring progress and adapting the plan over time.

* Motivational tips to overcome any moments of low enthusiasm.

Supporting study and learning

Increasingly educational officials express concern that AI does students’ homework for them. This overshadows the true advantages that can helping student (and teachers) understand, learn, and memorize subjects and topics as part of a study program. Because one of Google’s main mission goals is to educate, its contributions include:

  • Advancing complex studying with Ai: New and powerful high-reasoning models can navigate you through STEM subjects, such as complex math problems with step-by-step guidance. How AI handles mathematical formulas marks a significant milestone in this area.
  • Generating study content and tests/quizzes via NotebookLM: This feature helps you prepare for tests and exams. It can also assist in designing a paper or thesis and offer advice on improving documents.
  • Gemini research and learning features: Generative AI is particularly skilled at making complex topics and subjects easier to understand. For deep dives, you can find information using the Deep Research feature. Also, it’s no coincidence that Google recently released the Guided Learning tool that trains you in topics using the Gemini prompt field.

The following builds on a prompt from Chapter 8 of Google Gemini For Dummies that optimizes educational endeavors. Some notes on its use:

  • It may oversimplify your subject. This prompt can possibly summarize your topic producing a response that lacks important elements. Beware that excessive simplification may alter its meaning.
  • Like all study, it should make your mind work. From an ethical point of view, it’s essential you not use AI assistance for mental idleness or become overly dependent upon it; you run the risk of losing analytical and critical thinking skills.

That said, this prompt can help you create a comprehensive study plan that includes a study calendar, note taking tips, memorization methods, and stress management — basically everything you need to support learn a topic and successfully passing an examination:

Context:

You are an expert in learning techniques, study methods, and memorization strategies. You have a solid knowledge of different teaching methods, time management, and stress management related to studying. You are familiar with practical tools such as mind maps, speed reading techniques, the Pomodoro method, and exam preparation strategies (e.g., schematization, active repetition, revision techniques).

Role:

You act as a personal tutor and learning coach, providing support in the study of any subject, from primary school to university or vocational training. You offer personalized study plans, practical advice for improving concentration, and tips for learning more efficiently and effectively.

Objective:

Provide a comprehensive and personalized study plan, including the following elements:

1. Initial assessment: Gather information about the user’s level of preparation, the specific subjects or topics to be covered, the time available, and the preferred learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic).

2. Goal setting: Help the user set clear, realistic, and measurable learning goals (e.g., pass an exam with a certain grade, improve understanding of a specific topic).

3. Structured study plan: Propose a detailed study schedule, with indications of which topics to cover each day, how much time to devote to studying, and when to take breaks and review.

4. Learning strategies: Suggest specific techniques based on the subject (e.g., summary sheets for theoretical subjects, practical exercises for scientific subjects, quizzes for self-assessment).

* Specific memorization techniques for historical events, dates, and figures.

* Tips for approaching the exam with confidence and maintaining concentration while studying.

* Additional resources (e.g., documentaries, podcasts, academic articles) to explore more complex topics in depth.

Assisting you with basic finances

Increasingly financial institutions and AI providers talk about using generative AI models’ “reasoning” in investment operations or other financial activities — especially when it comes to combining existing and reliable documents with data.

Despite this, it’s best to leave this type of experiment to experts you trust. For that matter, AI’s general advice that cannot replace a professional — experts who work in the field and who:

  • Possess industry knowledge. They can recognize any incomplete or inaccurate information that generative AI provides.
  • Are versed in data and personal security. They know to protect your data, and understand the sensitivities related to significant debts or investments of a particularly “important” amount.

For more common and basic level use, however, Gemini can offer advice on

  • Budgeting, savings, and managing your finances more efficiently.
  • Evaluating a purchase — that is the amortization of the expense based on the use of a service, product, and/or material purchased.

Translating and learning languages

Another task in which generative AI excels translating the world’s major languages; when it comes to reviewing translations, or helping you learn a new language, its usefulness is undeniable.

A chatbot like Gemini cannot replace native-speaking editors, especially in their ability to grasp linguistic and cultural nuances, the lack of which can lead to literal translations and misunderstandings.

You can try the following prompt, suitable for minimizing linguistical errors and providing more satisfactory translations or revisions:

Personalizing entertainment recommendations

By blending refined chat with real-time search functions, Gemini delivers invaluable entertainment sources tailored to your preferences, tastes, and interests. Managing your time and activities

Gemini’s markedly popular projects and time management features including

  • Organizing your day by setting reminders
  • Planning an activity or project based on available time and resources

While structuring your day boosts productivity and lowers the stress of planning and managing complex activities, chatbots have limits. They cannot predict or manage sudden plan changes with the same care or attention as a human. To get the most out of planning, always provide the following so AI can help manage events in the best possible way.

  • Granular context: Any detail or possible situation that can hinder your project or event
  • Priorities: The most important deliverables or tasks that must happen on your schedule
