File Share on Your BlackBerry PlayBook Using WiFi

You can share files back and forth between your BlackBerry PlayBook and a WiFi equipped personal or laptop computer. Although it can be made to work, it is a rather complex process. (This may be an area where RIM will make improvements to the operating system.)

Very few desktop machines have WiFi transceivers; on the other hand, nearly all current laptop computers have them.

Here’s how to share files by WiFi:

  1. From the BlackBerry PlayBook home screen, tap the gear icon.

  2. Tap the Storage & Sharing panel.

  3. Press and hold on the screen; then move it up so that WiFi Sharing appears.

  4. Make sure the WiFi Sharing toggle is On.

If not, touch and hold the switch and slide it to the right so that the On indicator is blue.

  5. Tap the About panel on the left side of the screen.

  6. Tap the View Information arrow and select Network.

  7. From the Network screen, determine the wireless IP address (IPv4) for your PlayBook.

  8. Switch over to your WiFi–equipped laptop or other device, and go to the IP address of the PlayBook.

  9. On a Windows computer, open the Run dialog box.

  10. Enter \\xxx.xxx.x.x.

Replace x with the actual IP address of the BlackBerry PlayBook you got from the Network screen. And don’t include that last period.

On a Mac computer, select Go→Connect to Server and enter smb://xxx.xxx.x.x. Replace x with the actual IP address of the BlackBerry PlayBook.

If you’ve done it right, you’re connected to the Media folder on the BlackBerry PlayBook, which contains subfolders for documents, music, photos, videos, books, and more. You can then move files between the computer and the folders.

If you have problems setting up this WiFi connection, try these two suggestions:

  • Call BlackBerry PlayBook support during your 90 days of free assistance and ask them to help.

  • Rely on the USB cable for transfer of files. It is quicker, easily set up, and reliable.
