These practice questions are all about interpreting and working with data. Just like on most typical numeracy tests, some of the questions are multiple choice.

Answer: D: November. This is where the road accidents line is lowest.

Answer: C: 40ºC. The maximum is the highest point on the graph.

## Mrs Miggins’ Pie Shop sells several different pies. The pie chart shows her sales for one day. The angle of the slice for mushroom pies is 60º. How many mushroom pies did she sell?

A: 20

B: 30

C: 60

D: 120

Answer: B: 30. There are 360 degrees in a circle, and 180 pies – so there are two degrees for each pie. If the angle is 60º, that corresponds to 30 pies.

## The figure shows the nationalities of students on an exchange visit to London. Which country sent the most students?

A: Spain

B: Sweden

C: Spain and Germany

D: Germany

Answer: B: Sweden. Sweden sent a total of 38 students, Germany and Spain only 35.

## Dawn records the heights of her prize sunflowers in the tally chart shown. Which group is the modal group?

A: 60-80cm

B: 80-100cm

C: 100-120cm

D: The data has no mode.

Answer: C: 100-120cm. The modal group is the one containing the biggest number of sunflowers.

When you’re working with a tally chart, it’s usually easier to work with numbers than with tally marks. Count up the tallies (each cluster is worth 5) and write them down next to the group so you can refer to them.

## What is wrong with this graph?

Answer: The months aren’t evenly spaced! Many months are missing.

## A party must win at least 10% of the votes in a town to avoid losing its deposit. In how many of the three towns did the Slightly Silly party lose its deposit?

Answer: Only one (Carrolton). It won 10% in Barbury and 20% in Alberton.
