How to Use Flash Exposure Compensation on Your Canon EOS 6D

When you add a Speedlite to your Canon EOS 6D, you’re in complete control, especially with the flash exposure compensation function. If you review an image on your camera LCD monitor and notice that there’s too much or too little flash, you can rectify the problem. Flash exposure compensation enables you to modify the amount of power from your flash by up to 3 stops in 1/3 stop increments.

To use flash exposure compensation:

  1. Navigate to the External Speedlite control menu.

  2. Use the Multi-controller or Quick Control dial to highlight Flash Function Settings and press Set.

The Flash Function settings are displayed.

  3. Use the Multi-controller or Quick Control dial to highlight Flash Exposure Compensation and then press Set.

The Flash Exposure Compensation menu is displayed.

  4. Use the Quick Control dial to increase or decrease the power from the flash unit in 1/3 stop increments and then press Set.

    The change is applied.

  5. Press the Shutter button halfway to return to picture shooting mode.

Remember to set Flash Exposure compensation back to 0 after you’ve shot the pictures that need flash exposure compensation.

Your flash unit may also have the option to bracket flash exposure. If this option is available, you’ll see an FEB icon on the Flash Function Settings menu. When you choose this option, you capture three images: one with the flash exposure the camera deems optimum for the current lighting conditions; one image with negative flash exposure compensation, and one image with positive flash compensation.

When you’re photographing a person and there’s a colorful background behind her, set camera Exposure Compensation to -1 stop, and set Flash Exposure Compensation to +1 stop. Your subject will be perfectly exposed, but the background will be slightly underexposed, which results in wonderfully saturated colors. This technique also works well when you photograph subjects such as flowers.
