How to Add a Picture to an Android Phone Contact

The simplest way to add a picture to an Android phone contact is to have the image already stored in the phone. You can snap a picture and save it, grab a picture from the Internet, or use any image already stored in the phone’s Gallery app. The image doesn’t even have to be a picture of the contact — any image will do.

After the contact’s photo, or any other suitable image, is stored on the phone, follow these steps to update the contact’s information:

  1. Locate and display the contact’s information.

  2. Press the Menu soft button and choose the Edit or Edit Contact command.

  3. Touch the icon where the contact’s picture would go, or touch the existing picture assigned to the contact.

The icon shows a generic placeholder if no picture is assigned.

  4. Choose the option to select a photo from the Gallery.

The option could be titled Select Photo from Gallery or just Gallery.

If you have other image management apps on your phone, you can instead choose the app’s command from the list.

  5. Browse the gallery to look for a suitable image.

  6. Touch the image you want to use for the contact.

  7. Optionally, crop the image.

The cropping tool on your phone may look different from the one shown.

  8. Touch the Save button to set the contact’s image.

  9. If necessary, touch the Save button again to finish editing the contact.

The image is now assigned, and it appears whenever the contact is referenced on your phone.

You can add pictures to contacts on your Google account by using any computer. Just visit your Gmail Contacts list to edit a contact. You can then add to that contact any picture stored on your computer. The picture is eventually synced with the same contact on your Android phone.

  • Pictures can also be added by your Gmail friends and contacts when they add their own images to their accounts.

  • You may also see pictures assigned to your contacts based on pictures supplied on Facebook or other social networking sites.

  • Some images in the Gallery may not work for contact icons. For example, images synchronized with your online photo albums may be unavailable.

  • To remove or change a contact’s picture, follow Steps 1 through 3 in the preceding list. Choose Remove Icon to get rid of the existing image; choose Change Icon to set a new image.
