Changing Media Streaming Options on a Windows 7 Home Network

You can easily share and stream media, such as music, pictures, TV programs, and videos across your home network with Windows 7. If you want to control what can be streamed across your Windows 7 network, follow these steps to change the media streaming options:

1

Open the Windows Control Panel, and then click Network and Internet.

The Network and Internet window appears.

2

Click Network and Sharing Center.

The Network and Sharing Center window appears.

3

In the left pane, click Change Advanced Sharing Settings.

Windows creates separate network profiles for each of your networks (for example, Home or Work and Public).

4

Under the profile you wish to change, scroll to the Media Streaming section and click Choose Media Streaming Options.

The Media Streaming Options window appears.

5

Enter a name for your media library. Click Choose Default Settings.

The default name for your media library is your account name. The Default Media Streaming Settings dialog box appears.

6

Choose what Star and Parental ratings for music, pictures, recorded TV, and video that you want to allow to be streamed to other computers on your network. Click OK.

The Media Streaming Options window appears.

7

If desired, click the Allow All or Block All button above the list of devices to override the default settings for all devices on your network.

You can also select an individual device and choose Allowed or Blocked or click the Customize link.

8

If you click Customize, the Customize Media Streaming Settings dialog box appears. If desired, deselect the Use Default Settings check box and customize the media streaming options for the selected device. Click OK.

Windows 7 saves your changes to the media streaming options.

By default, most of the items in your Windows Media Player library are automatically assigned a rating from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest) stars. These ratings are assigned by third-party providers and online stores. You can manually change the rating by right-clicking the item you would like to change in Windows Media Player, selecting Rate from the drop-down menu, and clicking the new rating you would like to assign (1 to 5 stars, or unrated).
