How to Install and Configure a Joomla Component Extension

By Seamus Bellamy, Steve Holzner

The installation process for Joomla extensions is the same as the one for templates. Simply choose Extensions→Extension Manager in any back-end page to install templates, modules, components, and plug-ins.

To install a component in Joomla, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Extensions→Extensions Manager in any back-end page.

    Extension Manager opens.

  2. In the Upload Package File section, click the Choose File button to browse to and select the component file on your hard drive.

The filename appears in the Package File text box.

  3. Click the Upload File & Install button.

Joomla uploads and installs the file. When it finishes, it displays a message telling you that installation was successful.

After the component has been installed, you are presented with a message saying that the installation process was a success. If you’re the sort who prefers to do their computing while wearing a tinfoil hat, you can disbelieve this message and check the validity of the installation for yourself.

  1. From the Extension Manager, click the Manage tab to open Extension Manager: Manage page.

  2. Enter the name of the new extension you’re looking for into the search box on the upper-left side of the page. Now, click the Search button.

The new component is present and accounted for.

Now that you’ve installed your component, you’re going to want to get it up and running smoothly. That means looking to the component’s configuration.

To configure a new component, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Components→name, where name is the component, to open a configuration page.

  2. Change any settings you want.

It’s worth mentioning that not every component needs to be configured. Many, thanks to the efforts of the Joomla community’s fabulous developers, are ready and waiting to serve your needs from the moment that they are installed.
