How to Customize Toolbars and Menus in Office 2008 for Mac

By Bob LeVitus

The programs in Office 2008 for Mac are extremely customizable. You’re free to modify the included toolbars and menus by adding or deleting items. If you’d like, you can even create your own toolbars from scratch.

1Choose View→Customize Toolbars and Menus.

The Customize Toolbars and Menus dialog appears. If you don’t see the Toolbars and Menus pane, click the Toolbars and Menus tab.

2Locate the toolbar or menu you want to modify in the large scrolling Commands list and click that toolbar’s or menu’s Show check box.

The toolbar or menu appears on-screen.

3Click the Commands tab.

The Commands pane appears.

4In the Categories list, select the category that contains the command or tool you want to add.

Then drag your chosen command or tool from the Commands list into position on the desired toolbar or menu. Repeat these steps until you’re done adding commands or tools.

5Click OK to close the Customize Toolbars and Menus dialog.

To remove a toolbar button or menu item, drag the offending item off of the toolbar or menu and release the mouse button. When you do, the toolbar button or menu item will disappear.
