How to Share an Evernote Notebook

By David E. Y. Sarna

When you hover over the name of a notebook in Evernote, you see two icons: a gear icon, which allows you to rename a notebook, and the Share icon, which looks like a box with an arrow coming out of it. You have the option to share a notebook with only certain individuals or you can create a public link to share it with everyone.

To continue sharing a notebook with individuals, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Share icon.

You will get a dialog box where you can select whether you want to share the notebook with individuals or share it with everyone by creating a public link.

  2. Clicking the Share with Individuals button takes you to the screen shown.

Enter the e-mail addresses of the people you want to share the notebook with in the box. If you are entering multiple e-mail addresses, they must be separated by a comma.

  3. Select permission level for the invitees.

Under the heading Individuals who join can, click the drop down menu to select one of the following permission levels:

    • View notes: Invitees can only see the notes in the notebook.

    • View notes and activity: Invitees can see the notes in the notebook as well as any activity on the notebook such as updates or deletions.

    • Modify notes: Invitees can view, create, delete, and edit existing notes as well as see the activity on the notebook.

    • Modify and invite others: Invitees have the same privileges as the notebook creator: view, edit, delete and create notes, see the activity stream, add new people to the invite list as well as update the permissions of those people who already have access to the notebook.

  4. Select whether or not to make invitees log into the notebook.

By checking the Allow notebook preview without requiring login box, you are giving the recipients the opportunity to see your notebook without having logged into their own Evernote account. Unchecking the box will require them to be logged into their account to view the information.

  5. (Optional) Add a message.

Add a message to the e-mail invitation telling the recipients why you are sharing this notebook with them.

  6. Click the Share button.

Enter the e-mail addresses of the people you want to share the notebook with in the box. If you are entering multiple e-mail addresses, they must be separated by a comma.

  7. (Optional) Perform additional sharing activities.

A dialog box appears giving you the opportunity to share the document again via the Public link URL or by inviting more people via e-mail. You can also manage the notebook access permissions of the people you have already invited to access the notebook.

  8. Click the Dismiss button.

The dialog box disappears and you are returned to your Evernote account page.

A notebook that you make public can be accessed by anyone who has the link. Links you share with contacts can be accessed only by them.
