How to Size Your Google+ Profile Photo

By Janine Warner, David LaFontaine

The broad canvas that Google+ provides you comes with quite a few quirks, which have led to a great deal of disagreement with designers. Google+ includes a large space at the top of each profile for a big image — or collage of images — but Google also resizes your image for best display across computers, tablets, and smartphones as well as Google TV and other large displays.

Pay close attention to your profile image because it’s featured heavily in the latest Google+ redesign. In addition to appearing in the top left of your cover design, your profile image appears anywhere you post, or you’re reposted, on Google. Your profile image will also be used if you participate in Google Hangouts or other Google+ related services.

You need to upload a JPEG, GIF, or simple PNG file. Layered PNG files or Photoshop PSD files aren’t compatible for Google+, and trying to upload an image in one of these formats will result in an error message.

To upload and edit a profile photo, follow these steps:

  1. Sign into your Google account.

  2. Place your cursor over your profile picture and click the camera icon.
