How to Manage a Project in Socialcast
Pick a project or start a new one.
From anywhere in Socialcast, point to or tap the Projects icon on the main toolbar. If you hover there a moment, the Projects box appears. Here you can start a new project, search for an existing project, or view the whole list of current projects.
Click on the + icon to start a new project.
Create the new project.
Give the project a title and description. You can also add a photo if you wish. Then decide if you want the project access limited to only the people you invite, or if it should be open to anyone in the company who wants to participate. Click project, and Socialcast will set up the project page.
Determine the project’s major objectives.
Projects are always easier to tackle if you take the divide and conquer approach. Start with the main objectives, or major steps within the overall process. Click Add Objective and enter the first objective. Do the same thing for the rest of your objectives.
Add tasks for each objective and assign it to a user.
After you enter a new task, just click on the picture square to assign that task to a particular user. That person will get a notification of the assignment.
Assign due dates to the tasks and objectives.
Some people plan better by starting with the desired end date or deadline (the task of the final objective) and working backward. Either way, it’s very easy to assign or change a due date; just click the task’s due date field and choose one from the calendar that pops up.
Share the project with other people or groups.
If you want other people to have access to the project but aren’t assigning them any tasks, just click on the Invite Colleagues button and enter their names.
Sometimes it’s quicker to just add one or more groups to the project to ensure that everyone is at the table who needs to be. (It’s still up to them to play along.)
Click in the Add Groups text box and press the space bar. Voila! All of your groups (as well as other public groups) magically appear. You can add none or all of them.
Change your mind.
Oops! It never fails; something changes midstream. If you need to rearrange tasks, move them from one objective to another, or rearrange the objectives themselves, no problem! Just click on the far left edge of the item until the handle appears and then drag it wherever you want it to go.
When you grab an objective and start to drag it around, all the tasks under will collapse so it’s easier to drag the whole objective up or down without all those silly tasks in the way.
Post a file.
On the right side of the project area is the Project Activity stream. You can write instructions here, make comments, post a file, and other status updates.
To see a list of all the files posted in this project over time, click on the Files tab.
Ask a question.
If you click on Question above the status entry box, Socialcast will give you the option of just asking a simple question, or composing a brief poll. If you want to ask a question, just start typing where it says Ask something.
If you want to make a poll, add the question where it says Poll title and put the possible responses in the Add a poll option text boxes. You can also direct the poll to specific people or groups, and you can attach any kind of file to any kind of status update including polls.
Track your success.
As tasks are completed, you can check them off. By default, they’ll disappear from the screen and just leave the remaining to-dos. Sometimes it’s more gratifying to see all the tasks you’ve already accomplished instead of only what’s left to do. To see all the tasks, click the down arrow next to the word Active and choose All from the drop-down list.
Celebrate the completion with your colleagues.
When all the tasks are complete, the dashboard will indicate 100% and the light will turn green. To mark the whole project as off your plate, finally!, select Complete Project from the drop-down menu. Socialcast will mark the project complete and post a notification to everyone on the team.
