Manufacturers sell medicine cabinets preassembled except for the doors, with drywall anchors to fasten them to walls. Because of its weight, the best location for this cabinet is on the wall with a wall stud behind it. You don’t want it falling off the wall, so fasten it securely to the wall framing, which is much more secure than the wallboard alone.
Because most wall studs are 16 inches on center, meaning that a space of 16 inches sits between the centers of two studs, and a cabinet is at least 15 inches wide, you should be able to adjust the position of the cabinet to center one of the mounting holes over the wall stud.
To hang a medicine cabinet on the wall, you need the following items:
Carpenter's level
Electric drill
Electronic stud finder
Screwdriver
Shims
Wall-mount medicine cabinet with wall anchors
Follow these steps to hang a medicine cabinet:
With a stud finder, locate at least one wall stud within the mounting area of the cabinet.
Level and mount the medicine cabinet to the wall by driving a screw through the back of the cabinet at the top and bottom into at least one wall stud.
Drill at least two additional holes through the cabinet into the wall. Remove the cabinet to install wall anchors and reposition the cabinet to drive in all screws.
If another stud is not located behind the cabinet, use a winged or coarse-threaded wall anchor. Follow the directions that come with the medicine cabinet to ensure that it doesn’t require a different kind of mounting process.
Whenever you need to install a wall anchor, check the installation instructions. Depending on the type of anchor, you may need to drill a hole and install the anchor before you put the cabinet in position to hang it.
